I’m Mathieu Servais, the creator behind @id_curated, where I’ve been curating the best of product design for several years.

My latest project Exploded Icons is a visual series that uncovers the hidden beauty of everyday yet iconic objects from the past few decades.

As a designer myself, I’ve always been captivated by the inner workings of objects—the hidden, thoughtfully designed parts that are often overlooked, yet essential in creating something iconic.

Exploded views have long been a key part of the industrial design process, helping designers, engineers, and artisans visualize the components of an object and how they fit together. This illustration technique dates back to the Renaissance, with examples found in the sketchbooks of Marino Taccola or Leonardo da Vinci.

The objects I’ve chosen for this series hold personal significance, being some of my favourite designs from the past few decades. These are everyday objects that I consider truly iconic, having been part of my life and reflecting significant moments in design history.

Each piece is carefully modelled and rendered in 3D, down to the last detail, to reveal through eye-catching exploded views the ingenuity that lies beneath the surface of these icons.
